VLADIMIR VASILYEV AND G-ENERGY TEAM DEFENDS THEIR WORLD CUP LEAD AFTER “OILYBIA RALLY OF MOROCCO 2014"
The first decade of October was really hot while "OiLybia Rally of Morocco 2014" held in Morocco in status of the ninth stage of FIA Cross-Country World Cup.
On a route with a distance of 2000 km, competitors each stage were met by very serious tests – sandy erg in Erfoud and Zagora with sharp peaks of high dunes and difficult navigation, or “oueds" which mean the dried-up beds of the rivers, with rigid stone steps and dangerous holes, the mountain pass of Atlas mountains on the way to Ouarzazate and Marrakech and many others insidiousness of the African routes.
The crew of G-Energy Team - Vladimir Vasilyev/Konstantin Zhiltsov was also under the most serious pressure by the strong rivals with the main one - Qatar pilot Nasser Al-Attiyah with the skilled Frenchman Matthieu Boumel, who was in race on the wheel of Mini All4 Racing. Every race day leadership passed from hand to hand and the name of winner was defined only on the finish!
Having adjusted a suspension settings and turbo-diesel engine on the Russian Mini All4 Racing, starting number #300, during the prestarting "shakedown", the Russian duet went into the power of African Sahara. For Vladimir Vasilyev this race became the second experience, and the navigator Konstantin Zhiltsov was in Morocco five-six times and with a big accuracy remembered reference points on the district where it was possible to get lost.
Russians had to fight every day for a position in a-point zone, especially after a 5-minute penalty for the stamp absence in time card. The strategy of Vasilyev/Zhiltsov was simple – to attack and avoid mistakes.
To the fourth stage the crew of G-Energy Team gained some positions from 8th to 5th respectively, at the fifth stage it was succeeded to win back one more position and to come nearer to the third place. The final stage included a short special stage, with a distance of only 113 km therefore it became impossible to break through in top-3, and race came to the end for Russians on the fourth place.
Vladimir Vasilyev: Race was difficult, sharp in fight and useful to preparation for "Dakar". Organizers prepared for us the difficult route, there were many sands, and also very narrow and dangerous mountain serpentines. The car in the conditions of extreme loadings fulfilled perfectly, for what thanks to X-Raid staff and our partners G-Energy. As for the World Cup, we have a very strong rival Nasser Al-Attiyah, we fought up till the last kilometer to be in top-3. I am not absolutely happy with result, it would be desirable better, but we will prepare more seriously for a final round in Portugal.
Konstantin Zhiltsov: Race in Morocco was as always very interesting and pleasant for me - various, with dunes and navigation. It is a big challenge where you can work with cars and yourselves, it is good preparation for Dakar and check your forces concerning other participants. Race for us developed not badly, we showed the 4th result among strong rivals. As for a situation in the World Cup, everything will be solved in Portugal now, we will fight.
Following the results of race, Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov added 24 points to their classification points summary and kept the safety lead in FIA Cross-Country world Cup 2014. However the difference of points with Nasser Al-Attiyah wasn't enough for an early victory in World Cup, so the destiny of a title will be decided at a final tenth stage in Portugal which will pass from October 30th to November 1st 2014 on “28th Baja Portalegre 500".

"A challenge for those who go on. A dream for those who stay behind." This is how the founder of the Dakar Rally, Thierry Sabine, once described his inspiration for the most fascinating rally event on the international motorsport calendar. Since 1978, courageous drivers on motorcycles, quads, in cars and trucks have been demonstrating their ability as they make their way through the desert on the world's most infamous endurance rally.
Up to 2008, the event was held exclusively in Africa, and was initially known as the "Paris-Dakar Rally" due to the location of its start and finish. Over the course of time, the route and the start and finish locations have changed several times. In 1995 the rally started elsewhere other than Paris for the first time. "Paris-Dakar" became "Dakar". Then, in 2009, the unsettled political situation in some African countries saw the event moved to South America, where it has been held since – and has lost none of its original appeal.
All this makes the Dakar Rally a unique challenge for man and machine. Unlike rallies such as those in the World Rally Championship (WRC), this marathon rally does not take place on designated, blocked-off roads and routes, but on open, largely unmarked terrain. Each entrant must first and foremost rely on his/her driving skills.
The competitors must complete up to 800 kilometres per day – a nerve-wracking, two-week marathon, during which the organisers only allow the drivers one rest day. No wonder more than 50% of entrants retire from the Dakar Rally each year. Whatever happens, every day will be an exciting day once the Dakar Rally gets underway again in January 2014.
