Continuing a successful performance in FIA World Cup 2014 where after eight stages the Russian crew Vladimir Vasilyev/Konstantin Zhiltsov keeps the lead in overall classification together with VRT G-Energy Team, the “duo" goes to Morocco where the penultimate stage of a world cross-country rally Series – Rally of "OiLibya of Morocco 2014" will take place from October 3rd to 9th 2014.
It is difficult to overestimate importance of this competition as Morocco, except the crews fighting for points of the World Cup, traditionally welcomes on the start-line the leading teams and top pilots who prepare for "Dakar" and carry out final tests of their cars. Therefore this race is known for its record number of participants.
More than 200 competitors in different race categories, including 77 cars and 16 trucks will accept start of the African six-day rally which will depart from the city of Erfoud known for the sandy ergs, in the south east of Morocco.
Vladimir Vasilyev together with Konstantin Zhiltsov had a good experience in rally of Morocco - last year Vasilyev finished on podium with a the third place! All saved-up experience in total with the reliable car Mini All4 Racing and professional support from X-Raid and G-Energy, intends to use crew as much as possible in Morocco for fight for points of the World Cup.
Over the course of the Rally of Morocco, the competitors will cover a total distance of 1991 kilometres, 1441 of them in special stages. The first service park will be erected at Erfoud. The first three stages will be started from there but then, the rally train will travel to Zagora. On the first two days, the drivers will have to cope with sand and dunes, day three will feature fast and sandy sections. Following a sandy fourth stage, day five will take the teams to Marrakesh – on fast but narrow roads, across the Atlas Mountains. The sixth and final stage will be particularly challenging for the navigators and takes the competitors to the finish podium in Marrakesh.
Vladimir Vasilyev: "Rally of Morocco is the main race of the World Cup for our team in fight for a champion's title. We will try to take points which in Morocco will be doubled. Race is very difficult and interesting, demanding serious work as pilot, and the navigator. The route in Morocco is very various - alternation of stony and sands with passing the ergs, plateau and oueds. Rather not easy now to estimate complexity of a route as this year, because Organizers added some places where earlier we didn't race. There will be a site, new to all, it is Marrakech, and a stage around it. Finally, the participants as always are very strong!".
Konstantin Zhiltsov: "Rally of Morocco is very popular traditional race, favorite for everything, and more and more people about it speak and respectively try to go there. This year the list of competitors are very big. Rally of Morocco is the last large race before "Dakar-2015".
All X-Raid MINI team will arrive to Morocco for the private technical tests and most of the crews will continue the tests in race. Tactic will play large role, after all many will have no task to go to result, but our crew has a certain task, our main rival Nasser Al-Attiyah, we fight with him for a champion's title, and our position and difference regarding his will be important. Especially in this race double points will be added.
The essential increase in number of trucks can introduce additional complexity. If in one of days you "fail" and you start with a bad position, you start fighting against fast trucks, such as De Rooy. And if it is still dusty or mountain sites – that it is possible to waste a lot of time".
"A challenge for those who go on. A dream for those who stay behind." This is how the founder of the Dakar Rally, Thierry Sabine, once described his inspiration for the most fascinating rally event on the international motorsport calendar. Since 1978, courageous drivers on motorcycles, quads, in cars and trucks have been demonstrating their ability as they make their way through the desert on the world's most infamous endurance rally.
Up to 2008, the event was held exclusively in Africa, and was initially known as the "Paris-Dakar Rally" due to the location of its start and finish. Over the course of time, the route and the start and finish locations have changed several times. In 1995 the rally started elsewhere other than Paris for the first time. "Paris-Dakar" became "Dakar". Then, in 2009, the unsettled political situation in some African countries saw the event moved to South America, where it has been held since – and has lost none of its original appeal.
All this makes the Dakar Rally a unique challenge for man and machine. Unlike rallies such as those in the World Rally Championship (WRC), this marathon rally does not take place on designated, blocked-off roads and routes, but on open, largely unmarked terrain. Each entrant must first and foremost rely on his/her driving skills.
The competitors must complete up to 800 kilometres per day – a nerve-wracking, two-week marathon, during which the organisers only allow the drivers one rest day. No wonder more than 50% of entrants retire from the Dakar Rally each year. Whatever happens, every day will be an exciting day once the Dakar Rally gets underway again in January 2014.
